Red Dye You Are EVIL!

This past week I finished reading, "Is This Your Child?" by Doris Rapp, M.D. Let me just say that this book was a huge eye opener on a lot of things that trigger Rockstar on certain occasions( when red dye is present) to experience difficulties with expressing himself without becoming upset. Mind you this isn't just a tantrum or his age, as I know my son and knew something just wasn't sitting right in the pit of my stomach. So, I investigated more, eliminated a few factors, and now realize what did not make him feel well. It took us five days to see the results of eliminating this key ingredient.

We have sat down with him and have talked to him a bit more about his eating options. As we like to have a free loving, thinking, and eating lifestyle here I also desire that my children feel well and express themselves throughout the day. He totally understood what we told him and even asked on specific foods. He caught on quickly on things that probably aren't the best choice and he was happy to say he was on board with this. I told him also that this will go for all of us in the household, as if it is not good for him to have then we really will not have it either. It is nice to be a team and a family.

My son adores gum. He will chew it constantly throughout the day that it was purchased and will finish the package in the same day. Last night he wanted to grab some more at the store. Once at the store we quickly realized that all of his favorite chewing gums had red and yellow dye( we also are avoiding yellow dye). Rockstar was totally cool with the information about it having red dye and he replied with a sweet suggestion of something else he could have.

More about the book...
This book is for parents that have children who, " are complaining, cranky, slow learners, aggressive, hyperactive, unwell, or depressed." If your child shows signs of rubbing their nose upward, eye circles, red ears, red cheeks, eye wrinkles, aggression, lack of alertness, and not limited to mottled tongue then it maybe from an unrecognized food allergy that can be worked out with an elimination diet.

I really enjoyed how in each age range and allergy the book would share a story about a family with that allergy and struggles that were unrecognized, the study, and how it was discovered what made the child unwell.

Rockstar is a very passionate, animated and intelligent dude. I often noticed around holidays, parties, play-dates and special occasions where he would have difficulties expressing himself so it would end up with him yelling and crying. All things we would be left confused to how this came to be. After reading this book it was apparent that we needed to look into this more.

I am a happy momma and today is a brand new day! I feel so empowered today.

Much love,
Nush

  1. We just found out that my son is sensitive to Gluten. If he has too much which is very very little then he is not a happy camper. I new in my gut that something was not right but it took some trial and error to find out what it was. This book sounds really good I'll have to pick up a copy.

Ps~ I got the package today and that lotion is awesome! It came at the perfect time too because with all of this snow my sons skins was so dry and it really helped! Thanks so much!

  2. I read the Unhealthy Truth - has some of the same information andscared the bejesus out of me.

I found that my son is sensitive to milk. We cut out his big servings and just allow the small ones that happen at school, and his rattly breathing went away.

It's so scary when something that simple and supposedly normal can do that to a kid.

  3. Maura- Yay on the lotion. Boo on the Gluten allergy, but how empowering is it when you are in tune with your child and knowing something just isn't right, right? Awesome that you were able to pinpoint it.

Kristine- Oh I totally want to read that... Ill have to see if our local library has it. My oldest has a milk allergy too. It mainly triggers his nose. We switched to Rice Milk and he has smaller servings of organic milk. I am looking into switching to Raw Milk. Hear nothing but raves about it.
