My brother found a small hunk of fallen Redwood while on a walk in Muir Woods. He created a sunken groove in the wood and installed a photo of himself with my infant son. He edged the frame in tooled leather and engraved the back with &quot;Happy Mother&#39;s Day&quot;. The most thoughtful gifts we have given have been ones the kids and I have made together. I&#39;ve come to realize that spending hours and stressing over trying to find just the right gift for someone is ridiculous and steals energy, time, and the love that was meant to be behind the gift in the first place. Last year we started giving handmade gifts that we&#39;d made over the months preceding Christmas. My current fav: a layered cookie jar each for all the kids&#39; cousins (in a recycled honey or large sauce jar topped with a rubberband around reclaimed fabric- labelled with instructions and a little note from us). We&#39;ve also rolled beeswax candles for grandparents to burn on their table at Christmas to think of their faraway grandchildren, sewn flaxseed-filled sacks to freeze and put on boo boos, and more.
